CRI seal of approvalNEW: Carpet and Rug Institute confers its Seal of Approval on Chemspec Ecogent Carpet Cleaner:
The Carpet and Rug Institute emphasizes that proper cleaning is critical to extending carpet's life and appearance - especially in high traffic areas. CRI's Seal of Approval program sets test methods and performance criteria for two categories of cleaning products - spot removers and pre-spray/in-tank cleaning solutions. Approved products are designed to be used in all settings: residential, commercial and institutional. Chemspec ECOgent Carpet Cleaner has received the seal of approval under the pre-spray/in-tank cleaning category.

The Seal of Approval program tests for:
  • Efficacy (the ability to remove stains)
  • Resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate)
  • pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers)
  • Optical Brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance)
  • Colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).
Readers are invited to visit the
CRI website for further details.

NEW: ECOgent Receives European
           Union Eco-label!

The Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has helped Cogent Environmental Solutions be awarded the first European Union Eco-label in North America. TURI's Surface Solutions Laboratory, under the direction of Carole LeBlanc, provided the technical assessment necessary for Cogent to receive the European Eco-label for an all-purpose cleaner.

The voluntary label is designed to encourage businesses to market products and services that are kinder to the environment and help European consumers - both public and private purchasers - to easily identify them. The Eco-label license allows Cogent to use the official Flower logo on its Ecogent General Purpose Cleaner (exclusively manufactured by Chemspec) to promote the product to more than 375 million consumers in the European Union.

NEW in Massachusetts: Cogent Environmental Solutions has been awarded a contract with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for Environmentally Preferable Cleaning Products. Cogent has been awarded as a Statewide supplier of general purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, glass cleaner and carpet cleaner. All Massachusetts State agents, political subdivisions, public schools and authorities may use the contract. For the Massachusetts test report, click here.

NEW in Healthy Carpet Cleaning!
The Envirodesic™ Certification Program has just published a Draft Advisory Statement on Healthy Carpet Cleaning. This is a working document that will help reach a consensus on ways of reducing harm associated with carpets and carpet cleaning. The Healthy Carpet Cleaning method proposed in this draft statement is an easy way of specifying healthy carpet cleaning practices and products for your facilities.

NEW Accommodation for Hypersensitivity: Accommodating Employees with Environmental Sensitivities: A Guide for the Workplace indicates that it is the law, not merely a courtesy, to provide accommodation in the worplace to people with disabilities, including environmental sensitivities. In recent case law the Supreme Court of Canada has radically changed and broadened the meaning of accommodation. The court has clarified the duty of employers and others to take every step available to them, to the point of undue hardship, to ensure that their workplaces and facilities are fully accessible for people with a wide range of disabilities including environmental sensitivities.
While the authors do not necessarily endorse ECOgent specifically, and while converting to ECOgent would not be sufficient to provide accommodation in most cases, ECOgent General Purpose Cleaner does simplify cleaning while providing a healthy environment free of volatile chemicals. We believe that converting to this healthier alternative for cleaning would be unlikely to be considered "undue hardship". For the workplace guide, click here. Specify Health and Safety with PRC:
Environment Canada's Environmental Choice Program has created a
new criteria for cleaning products (PRC-097). ECOgent is certified under PRC-097 as a "Cleaning Product with Low Potential for Environmental Illness and Endocrine Disruption". PRC-097 is an easy way of specifying an environmentally safe and healthy cleaner for your facilities.
